[During: this.] He hated to have to stop at all, but Jesper was, if nothing else, accommodating without it feeling as though he needed coddling. It wouldn't be for long, just enough to make his leg stop screaming, and they'd be back at it, to start the process of irritating the weakest part of his body all over again.
He doesn't know what Jesper heard, but he rather wishes he would just sit still. Just five or ten minutes, that's all he needed. "Jesper." he calls in a sharp snap of a whisper, a command to be answered if there ever was one.
But he gets no response. Dammit.
He grabs his cane to push himself up to his feet again, far sooner than he would have liked, for the sake of his lieutenant and his insatiable curiosity and need to move. He follows the path he'd seen him walking mere minutes before.
It's far in the distance, farther than makes sense for him to have traveled in such a small few minutes (or maybe he's just extra bitter today), so it's hard to make out. But there is definitely a masked figure behind him. "Jesper!" He doesn't bother whispering this time, trying to warn him before the cultist gets hands on him. Kaz moves at double speed now, no matter how impossible it seems that he could ever get there in time.
He has to try.
He manages to break into a run, ignoring the protesting of his leg the entire time, and in a twist of cruelty, he is almost there, just almost close enough he could lend some kind of hand to get him free from his attacker.
But almost has never been good enough. Almost is still a failure. Almost can still get someone killed.
And this time, almost has him staring at a wide-eyed look of terror unlike any he's ever seen on Jesper's face before, and in some flash of something he doesn't understand, the masked figure is gone.

And so is Jesper.
